National Soft Pretzel Month

jlwelsh / CC BY (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0)
April is National Soft Pretzel Month in the United States.

Pretzels are a baked product made from bread dough and commonly formed in a distinctive knot shape, although other shapes are also used. Pretzels are available in different types, but this is specifically for soft pretzels. Soft pretzels have a much more limited shelf life than hard pretzels and should be eaten shortly after preparation. Soft pretzels are a type that became popular in the United States.

Soft pretzels can also be covered in a variety of glazes and can be used for both sweet and savoury, depending on what they are made from, glazed with and served with. Soft pretzels have a more bread-like texture than the hard, crispy pretzels, and tend to be bigger.

National Pretzel Month

In the United States, October is National Pretzel Month.

Pretzels are a type of bread product. They are traditionally baked in a very distinctive "knot" shape. The pretzel is believed to have originated in European monasteries, and have for a long time been associated with Christianity.

The settlers who later became known as the Pennsylvania Dutch introduced the pretzel to the Americas. From Pennsylvania, the pretzel then spread out to other parts of the region. As new production methods for baking were introduced, soft pretzels became popular.

Today, there are many different types of pretzel. These are available in both hard and soft forms, and can come with a whole range of different glazes and seasonings as well as seeds and nuts. The pretzel can come in both sweet and savoury varieties, and can come from small, snack sized types up to much larger ones that are used to make such as sandwiches.

National Pretzel Day

National Pretzel Day is on April 26th in the United States.

Pretzels are a type of bread product that originated in Europe. The pretzel is most commonly shaped into a knot before being baked, although other shapes are possible. The dough would be rolled into a strip, which is intertwined and twisted back on itself, forming a distinctive shape. The exact origin of the pretzel is uncertain, but they are believed to have been first created by German monks in the Early Middle Ages. There are accounts of them possibly dating back to the 7th century AD.

Today, pretzels are available in many different sizes and types. Small pretzels can be eaten as a snack, whilst larger ones can be eaten more like normal bread. They can be treated with different seasonings, too. Salt is the most common seasoning for a savoury pretzel, with small ones tending to have crystals of salt on them, but other seasonings are possible too, such as chocolate, sugar and nuts, with there being sweet forms of pretzels too.
